Honey Cake with Fleur De Sel

Saturday, February 9, 2013

The days aren’t discarded or collected, they are bees that burned with sweetness or maddened the sting: the struggle continues, the journeys go and come between honey and pain. No, the net of years doesn’t unweave: there is no net. They don’t fall drop by drop from a river: there is no river. Sleep doesn’t divide life by halves, or action, or silence, or honor: life is a…

honey butter popcorn

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.’ – Lewis Carroll I’ve had honey butter popcorn on my to-do list ever since I saw Melissa’s version, but never got around to making it. Then…

baking cookies

whole wheat chocolate chip cookies. with spelt, and fleur de sel, and cacao nibs.

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

This week I got some nice little surprises from my dear husband: a gift certificate to itunes and a subscription to Saveur Magazine. Just because! I was rather excited, as music and cookbooks are at the top of my ‘ways to spend my time when everyone is sleeping’ list. So I was listening to music samples and flipping through pages, finding all kinds of goodness. My heart skipped…

baking dessert

salty bourbon squares

Saturday, July 7, 2012

When something brings out the worst in me, I find myself scrambling to find the good. After a 5 hour car trip alone with my two kids, where everyone [and that would be especially me] was crabby, where naps were rejected scornfully, and where a zip lock bag chock-full of cheddar bunnies was purposely, but oh so quietly, crumbled into the tiniest pieces imaginable, then sprinkled all over…

salted caramel sauce with bourbon

Monday, December 5, 2011

It’s that time of year again, a magical month full of contradictions. Outside our windows the world is icy cold, covered in a white dusting determined to keep us tucked away in our little homes. Inside, however, we are warm and glowing: the fire burns bright, the lights are twinkling, and we blush with the rosy glow of holiday cheer. It is a perfect winter wonderland, and we…

baking chocolate dessert

sweet and salty brownies

Monday, September 12, 2011

Even as a young girl, the sweet and salty combination was one of my most favorite things. I have very fond memories of my sister and I dunking hot, salty fries in cold, frothy chocolate shakes, gleeful at our latest invention. Sure, they were from some fast food empire, but we didn’t know any better, and thought we had come up with the most amazing discovery. [We also…

chocolate dessert ice cream

no-churn bittersweet chocolate ice cream with fleur de sel

Thursday, June 30, 2011

After making the vanilla bourbon ice cream, I had to give the  chocolate a try. I am sold on this no-churn ice cream. It’s so so easy, and it is so creamy. Bittersweet chocolate makes this incredible, and on a whim I sprinkled some fleur de sel on top. My heart stopped on first bite. I have been daydreaming of other flavor combinations, and am going to be…
