no-churn fig + coffee ice cream with cacao nibs

Thursday, September 19, 2013

It has always seemed strange to me…the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second. -John Steinbeck, Cannery Row Recently Puro Fairtrade…

simple strawberry ice

Monday, June 11, 2012

I tend to get hung up on things. I fall in love with something, or someone, and then get slightly obsessive. For instance, there was my u2 obsession. It’s possible I only listened to The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby for an entire year. There was also my Ella Fitzgerald kick, and you can ask anyone I worked with at a coffeehouse about that. There was Gone with…

no-churn rhubarb ice cream

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

It’s quiet here in this house; words are flitting past me in the silence and I can’t quite catch them. I’m actually eating this rhubarb ice cream while I sit here, trying to write of it’s glory: to capture tart! and sweet! and creamy! with eloquence and creativity. But this sly dessert wants all my attention; we’ve locked eyes now, and it doesn’t care about adjectives. So I’ll…

a simple breakfast smoothie

Thursday, February 23, 2012

I spent the weekend tossing and turning, crazy sick with the flu. While it was absolutely miserable, it was the first time in months that I had time to really hear myself. There are moments during sickness where one grasps delirium and clarity at the same time. Almost like in childbirth, the mind and all energy is turned inward, focusing on how the body is reacting and responding.…

no-churn blood orange ice cream

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

When I was 17, a good friend handed me a copy of U2’s Joshua Tree. It was moments before I was headed out the door on our yearly family vacation to Wisconsin Dells, and it couldn’t have come at a better time, since I had recently worn out all my favorite recorded-off-the-radio mix tapes. Of course, I had heard some songs off the Joshua Tree in passing, but…

toasted sesame ice cream sandwich cookies with no-churn chinese 5-spice coconut milk ice cream

Sunday, January 8, 2012

Ahem. These little ice cream sandwiches are so good. I wasn’t too sure about them, when I started scheming them up. But I love Chinese 5-spice, and toasted sesame oil, and coconut milk, and cookies and ice cream and crystallized ginger. So why not make dessert instead of stir fry? You are either totally into this right now, or wrinkling up your nose at me. I understand. But…

no-churn candy cane ice cream

Monday, December 12, 2011

I just couldn’t resist experimenting with the no-churn ice cream yet again. Candy cane ice cream is something I’ve experienced only a couple of times, but I enjoyed it so much I thought I should come up with my own version. So here it is – a minty wonderland of creamy deliciousness. I really didn’t think my family would be as crazy about it as they were, but…

no-churn pumpkin ice cream

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

I wasn’t so sure about pumpkin ice cream. But I couldn’t get it out of my head. Pumpkin sometimes ends up in odd places [for instance, in my latte], but once Fall arrives and sweaters are part of my everyday attire, that big orange gourd calls to me, promising comfort. This little experiment wasn’t a disappointment. Subtle pumpkin flavor, warm spices and creamy texture make this no-churn version…
