blood orange pie

Monday, February 4, 2013

[Note: this is a re-post, again. I know, tacky. But! I love this pie, and the original post contained photos that made me cringe. So, when I had a chance to remake this pie, I decided to take some new photos, too.] So, I’m on this blood orange kick. I keep buying bags of them, cutting them open one by one, just to see their pretty purple pieces…

bittersweet chocolate tartlets with flaky spelt crust + crème fraîche

Thursday, January 24, 2013

I’ve had several baking failures the past few weeks, but these little pretties came out perfect. I had used the bittersweet chocolate filling many times at a coffeehouse I baked at so I knew it couldn’t miss, only then it was in a large tart form with a shortbread crust. But I had been intrigued by Kim Boyce’s spelt pie dough, and decided to try it out here.…

no-churn raspberry chocolate chip ice cream

Friday, July 27, 2012

There are mornings, like everyone this weekend, where I open my eyes to a beautiful, sun-filled sky, only to turn on some sort of rectangular device and read sentence after sentence of misery and destruction and abuse and heartache. Then come those moments, moments where the world looks so bleak and hopeless, where the lurking arms of fear begin to grab for the thoughtful. The night then sets…

rustic tarts with my sister

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Part One: Kindred  [Celia and Rosalind, like sisters]  “I was too young that time to value her, But now I know her. If she be a traitor, Why, so am I. We still have slept together, Rose at an instant, learned, played, eat together, And wheresoe’er we went, like Juno’s swans, Still we went coupled and inseparable.” -William Shakespeare, As You Like It Part Two: Lamentations  If I…

salty bourbon squares

Saturday, July 7, 2012

When something brings out the worst in me, I find myself scrambling to find the good. After a 5 hour car trip alone with my two kids, where everyone [and that would be especially me] was crabby, where naps were rejected scornfully, and where a zip lock bag chock-full of cheddar bunnies was purposely, but oh so quietly, crumbled into the tiniest pieces imaginable, then sprinkled all over…

coffee blondies

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Dear Reader, I feel that you and I have come to a place in our relationship where I need to tell you something, and that it’s time for us to go a little deeper. It may be no surprise; perhaps you’ve picked up hints and started to figure things out. But if you haven’t, I’m worried this confession may not be what you expected. Or wanted. So I’m…

baking cake dessert

beet cake with chocolate

Monday, May 14, 2012

My four year old daughter anxiously turns to me at the dinner table, exclaiming, ‘Are my teeth purple yet? Are they purple?’ She is grinning, shoveling more and more beets into her mouth, swishing the small pieces around her teeth and tongue and lips, hoping by doing so her entire face will turn a beautiful hue of purply-pink. I can’t help but laugh at her excitement, knowing somehow…

dessert ice cream

no-churn rhubarb ice cream

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

It’s quiet here in this house; words are flitting past me in the silence and I can’t quite catch them. I’m actually eating this rhubarb ice cream while I sit here, trying to write of it’s glory: to capture tart! and sweet! and creamy! with eloquence and creativity. But this sly dessert wants all my attention; we’ve locked eyes now, and it doesn’t care about adjectives. So I’ll…

chocolate cardamom truffles

Thursday, February 16, 2012

I meant to have this up for Valentine’s Day, but it just didn’t happen.  So if you are still craving creamy, dreamy chocolate, then you’re in luck. I’ve always been a huge fan of chocolate and cardamom together – my obsession started with scones, and then moved on to other things: cookies, cakes, pudding. After making these truffles the first time I knew they needed a little spice…
